Federal prosecutors said Wednesday (June 8) that disgraced R&B singer R Kelly deserves to spend more than 25 years in prison after being convicted of sex trafficking. They urged District Judge Ann M Donnelly to make the sentence close to an effective life sentence for the 55-year-old singer. They highlighted the gravity of his crimes and how long he escaped the consequences for them.
Federal prosecutors wrote in a letter to the judge: “Kelly has exploited his fame and wealth for a quarter of a century to lure women and underage girls for sexual purposes. Indeed, the defendant’s decades of crime seem having been fueled by narcissism and the belief that his musical talent absolved him of any need to conform his conduct – however predatory, harmful, humiliating or abusive towards others – to the requirements of the law.”

They further wrote: “Put simply, the defendant’s crimes were calculated, methodical and part of a long-standing pattern of using his platform as a larger than life musical figure and network deep to gain access to adolescents, many of whom were particularly vulnerable, and then to exploit them for personal gain and sexual gratification. The government has no doubt that if given the opportunity to reoffend, the accused would do so.
Renowned defense attorney Jennifer Bonjean, who has represented the likes of Bill Cosby, took on the case; while Kelly plans to appeal the verdict, but not before he was sentenced on June 29. Sentencing was scheduled for June 15, but was moved to June 29 because the defense attorney said she had difficulty meeting Kelly in a federal cell due to Covid-19 restrictions, Law and crime reported. She also said she needed more time for mitigation experts to properly look into the matter.
On the other hand, netizens are dragging the singer very hard. One of them said: “He deserves a century. Another said: “I always wonder what punishment is enough. No punishment will undo the crimes or heal the wounds. 25 years seems like little given that its victims have so much to live for.” While one user commenting on his fans wrote: “If you still support R Kelly you are the worst and the bottom of the barrel. Hope I never meet his supporters. This is rubbish.” Another social media user said: ‘He might as well call the penitentiary because he’ll never come out
It deserves a century.

Guilty of “sexual abuse”
After decades of accusations of sexual misconduct, the singer was convicted last year in September of nine counts related to accusations that the singer orchestrated a long-running scheme to recruit and abuse women and underage girls.
Among those allegations, jurors heard testimony about a fraudulent marriage scheme designed to protect Kelly after he impregnated R&B phenomenon Aaliyah in 1994, when she was 15. They got married using a license falsely mentioning his age of 18, he was 27 at the time. Aaliyah worked with the singer, who wrote and produced her 1994 debut album, ‘Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number’. She died in a plane crash in 2001 at the age of 22.
